These women's
commitment to their reasons for fighting soon won the respect of their
adversaries. The Germans soon started calling their female opponents of the
588 NBAP as the "Night Witches." The 588 NBAP received the
covetted designation of meritorious service, and appropriate losses, of being
elevated to the new title of 46 GvNBAP "Taman" (Guards Night Bomber
Aviation Regiment).
During the battle for Kursk in the summer of 1943, which would mean the collapse of any hope of a German victory in the East, until the Soviet assault against Berlin in May of 1945, the Soviet's female combat units were engaged in some of the heaviest aerial combat operations in history. Other women, like Str.
Lyt. Anna Timofeyeva-Yegorova GSS (Geroina Sovietskogo Soyuza
, Heroine of the Soviet Union) served in the Kuban and Crimea area flying
their "flying tank," the Il-2. Anna Timofeyeva-Yegorova,
deputy commander and regimental navigator of the 805 ShAP (
Shturmovick, Ground Attack Aviation Regiment), was the only female in the
unit she served with. This woman faced some of the fiercest aerial combat in
recorded history, against the Luftwaffe's JG-54.
