Although the Romans usually dated their years by the names of the consuls, years were occasionally dated from the founding of the city: ab urbe condita (AUC). Rome is traditionally considered to have been founded by Romulus April 21, 753 B.C. after slaying his brother over a dispute about where the city should be built and whose name it should bear.

Founder's Day

Remus and Romulus
Fought over borders till
One twin was dead,
Leaving the other with
Thus it is Roma, not
Rema instead!
