Deeds of Gift of John Cave

This is a transcription of three deeds of gift made in 1713 by John Cave to his wife Elizabeth Cave, his daughter Elizabeth Oden, and his son Thomas Cave in Charles County, MD. A few changes in spelling and capitalization have been made, and punctuation has been added to facilitate reading, but the grammar and syntax of the document are original. At the request of Francis and Elizabeth Oden of Charles County, MD
subsequent deed of gift was recorded this seventh day of October Anno
Domini 1713 ~~

To all Christian people, John Cave of Charles County and province of
Maryland sendeth greetings. Know ye that the said John Cave
as well for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which
I have and bear to my well beloved daughter Elizabeth now ye wife of
Francis Oden as also for divers other good causes and considerations and
hereunto moving have given and granted and by these presents do
give, grant, and confirm unto the said Elizabeth Oden one flock
bed and furniture, one large pewter basin, one brass skillet, and
two cows with their calves, the one called mottle face, the other called
Browney, being marked on ye right ear and an over
bit and an under bit on ye left ear to have and to hold all and
every the said goods and cattle with their future increase unto
the said Elizabeth Oden, her heirs and assigns forever to her and
their own proper use and behoove forever without any manner
or challenge, claim, or demand from me the said John Cave or from
any other person or persons whatsoever for me, or authorized or powered
by me, and without any money or other thing to be yielded therefore
unto me the said John Cave or my executors, administrators, assigns and
I the said John Cave all and every the aforesaid goods and cattle to ye
said Elizabeth Oden, her heirs or assigns to ye use aforesaid __ all and
every person or persons whatsoever do and will warrant and for-
ever defend by the aforesaid plenty of all and every which goods and cattle
I the said John Cave have put the said Elizabeth Oden in full and
peaceable possession by the delivery of one large pewter basin
which to the said Elizabeth Oden on that day of the date of these presents
I have given and delivered in ye name of possession or person
of all and singular the said premises in witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of October in ye
twelfth year of the reign of our sovereign lady Anne by the grace
of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland Queen and Defender
of the Faith and on and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred and thirteen.

Maryland sendeth greetings. Know ye that the said John Cave as well for and

in consideration ^ which I have and bear unto my well beloved wife Elizabeth
as also for divers other good causes and considerations and hereunto moving
have given and granted and by these presents do give, grant, and confirm
unto my said wife Elizabeth Cave all and singular my goods and chattels,
loans, debts, ready money, plow, household stuff and all other my substance
whatsoever movable and immovable, quick and dead, of what kind or nature
sover the same one, and in what place or places soever the same one and in
what place or places soever the same be, either in my possession or
in the custody of any other person or persons whatsoever to have
and to hold all land singular the said goods, chattels ever and all other
of aforesaid premises
unto the said Elizabeth Cave, her heirs or assigns forever to her and their
own proper use and behoove forever without any manner of challenge,
claim, or demand from me the said John Cave or from any other person or
persons whatsoever for me, or authorized or powered by me, and I the said
John Cave all and singular the aforesaid goods, chattels, and et cetera to the
Elizabeth Cave, her heirs and assigns to the aforesaid against all and
every person or persons whatsoever do and will warrant and forever
defend by these presents of all and every of which goods, chattels, and et cetera
the said John Cave have put the said Elizabeth Cave in full power and
possession by the delivery of one feather bed and furniture
which to my said wife Elizabeth Cave on the day of the date of these
presents I have given and delivered in the name of possession and
person of all and singular the premises. In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this sixth day of October in ye
twelfth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Anne by the grace
of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland Queen, Defender
of the Faith and on and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven

unto the said Thomas Cave one feather bed with the covering belong
thereto, also four pewter dishes and six pewter plates, also one bell
metal mortar and pestle and quart pewter basin, also one hand
mill and one iron pestle, also two iron pots, the one something broken,
the other containing two gallons, also one fowling piece, also one gray
gelding branded on ye rear buttock with T P known by ye name of Pentt,
also one bay gelding called Nobby and a mare called Nepp, both branded
on the rear buttock with ( ), also one bull, five young bullocks (viz),
two of red color between three and four years old, one of between
two and three years old black colored, two pied between one and two
years old, also six heifers named Cramp, Blossom ____ white face
Jebby, Coley, also four cows with their calves named Beauty, Cherry, Princess
and Adely, to have and to hold all and singular the said goods,
xxxxxxx horses, mare, and cattle with their future increase unto
the said Thomas Cave, his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns forever to his and
their personal use and behoove forever without any manner of
challenge, claim, or demand from me the said John Cave or from any
other person or persons whatsoever for me or authorized or planned by me
and without any money or other thing to be yielded therefore unto me
the said John Cave, my executors, administrators, or assigns to the use
aforesaid [against] all and every person
or persons whatsoever do and will warrant and forever defend by these
presents of all and every which goods, horses, mare, and cattle I ye said John
Cave have put ye said Thomas Cave in full and peaceable possession by the
delivery a bay gelding named Nobby which to the said Thomas Cave on ye
day of the date of these presents I have delivered in ye name of
possession and person of all and singular the said premises in witness
whereof I have set my hand and seal this fifth day of
October in the twelfth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Anne
by the grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland Queen, Defender
of the Faith in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirteen.
