The statesman and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) was the Roman equivalent of a corporate lawyer. His career suggests the political ambitions of the equites. They desired three things: (a) promotion of their business interests by the government; (b) protection against any attempts of the poor to have debts canceled; (c) admission to the higher political offices and the Senate.
