Originally named Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, Caligula (12-41) reigned only four years. He became seriously ill soon after his accession; it may have affected his sanity. He imagined himself a god and indulged in numerous acts of extravagance and cruelty. He was assassinated by a tribune of the guard. Ironically, it was his father's soldiers who had given him the nickname
