The story of the descent of the Romans from the Trojans through Aeneas rests on no historical foundation, but it was believed in an early period. In the Aeneid, Virgil describes the wanderings of Aeneas after the capture of Troy before he settled at Latium in Italy and became the ancestral hero of the Romans. Rome is traditionally considered to have been founded by Romulus, a descendant of Aeneas, on April 21, 753 B.C.
