The Roman poet Marcus Valerius Martialis, otherwise known as Martial, wrote a number of epigrams to depict scenes of contemporary Rome. The public latrines in Roman times were openly acknowledged as among the best appointed, best situated, and most frequented places in the city for socializing. This poem (Epigrams, XI, 77) has such a forica as its setting.
