In Greek mythology, Tantalus, son of Zeus and the nymph Pluto, was punished in the lower world for having divulged the secrets entrusted to him. He was afflicted with a raging thirst, and at the same time placed in the midst of a lake where the waters always receded from him as soon as he attempted to drink. Over his head hung branches of fruit, which receded when he stretched out his hand to reach them.
