note: A deed (December 30, 1797) says George and Lydia Petty were of Stockton, Union Co., South Carolina. He was living near current site of Dover in 1798. He moved to Tennessee about 1795 and was chosen to select the site and purchase 30 acres of land from the owner to create Stewart county. He settled on the Cumberland River near the present site of Dover and built the first house in the county seat. It was log construction and stood on the river bank. The road to his house was known as Pettys Street. The first county court met March 12, 1804, and George Petty was one of the justices. The December session of court was held at his home, and he was granted permission to keep a tavern and a ferry across the Cumberland River. His wife was the daughter of Patience Braswell and Charles Harrington. She was born February 22, 1773.
