note: His sons Zachariah (died August 16, 1780) and Edward (died March 15, 1781) served during the Revolutionary War. His son Thomas enlisted (April 8, 1778) at the age of 15 and served as fifer/drummer in the second Maryland Regiment, Continental line. On October 15, 1823, Thomas Butt of Greenbrier County, Virginia, one of the heirs-at-law of Edward and Zachariah Butt, applied for bounty land due on account of the Revolutionary War service of these soldiers. On January 3, 1824, Warrant 1072 for 100 acres of bounty land was issued on account of the service of Edward Butt and on that date Warrant 1073 for 100 acres of bounty land was issued on account of the service of Zachariah Butt for the benefit of Thomas Butt and the other heirs of the said soldiers.
