How To Use The Forum

In English 2322 and English 2327,

WWW Courses

One of the central differences between a standard, in-class-lecture-discussion English course and one offered on the internet is the flexibility in time and place. During the course of the semester, you will need to communicate with your instructor and your fellow students even though you might not be in a classroom at the same time. We can accomplish some this new communication via e-mail, telephone, or fax, but every one of these methods does NOT allow interactivity beyond two people. (Yes, conference telephones are available, but not practical!)

In order to open the class to discussion, however, we are able to use an interactive medium through theGuest Book feature found towards the bottom of the Syllabus page for your course. This allows all of you to use the "Comments" box for your questions, comments, and clarification issues. The Guest Book feature is located within the General Counter and looks like this:

This is a the Image Map. It is NOT live!

1. "Click" on "Sign the Guestbook".

2. Fill out the Form with your name, an e-mail address, your homepage (if any), and any other information you wish to offer The essential information should be your name and the class and the e-mail address.

3. The key area of your concern will be "Comment". Here you will use the space to answer a question, offer advice, ask a question, clarify a comment, etc.

4. After you have completed your comment, send the information. Your comment will appear as part of the on-going file, that is, if thirty comments are sent in, you will see them all listed by the time they were sent.

5. If you want to send a "private" message to me, click on "Private". I then can retrieve the message without its being available to the entire forum. (I would suggest, however, that you use e-mail for any private communication; this way I can respond via e-mail through the "reply" feature.

6. In order to read the messages every day, click on "Sign the Guestbook". As you scroll down beyond the usual form (You don't have to fill out the form to see the messages!), the messages should appear as the last part of the page.

7. The following Forums are active. Click on the link for your course. Find the "Counter" at the bottom of the page which comes up, i.e., your syllabus. Begin reading and/or sending comments to the class!
