NOTES FOR THE DESCENDANTS OF ANNA LOUISA (WELLINGTON) STONER

[The following information has been collected from various sources, and is being recorded especially for the descendants, by Mary Margaret (Stoner) McLean, one of Anna W. Stoner's granddaughters.]

[Anna Louisa (Wellington) Stoner was the daughter of Dr. Royal Wetherton Wellington and Martha Elizabeth (Foster) Wellington. One of Anna's most prized possessions was a very large, leather-bound, family Bible, which had belonged to her father, who was a medical doctor in Victoria and Refugio Counties, Texas. The title page of the Bible shows that it was printed in 1852, in Philadelphia, by Jesper Harding. The complete title page reads as follows:]

=============
PHILADELPHIA:
JESPER HARDING.
1852

[I suspect that one of the reasons this particular Bible was chosen by Dr. Wellington and his wife, was because it had four pages, with double columns to a page, on which were to be recorded the Marriages, Births, and Deaths of the family members. These pages were bound between the Books of the Old Testament of the Bible, and those of the New Testament, very effectively protecting the records of the families through several generations So that other members of the Stoner Family will also be able to have a copy of these very valuable historical records, Margaret Stoner McLean has made a complete transcription of what has been recorded in the Bible, and is identifying the handwriting of the person who recorded it. She has also added other notes which she is probably the only person who is now living who remembers all the details. It is her hope that future descendants will find the information valuable and interesting..]

MARRIAGES
[Entry 1, in the handwriting of Martha Elizabeth Foster Wellington:]

Royal W. Wellington and M. Elizabeth Foster married Jan. 23d, 1851==

[Note by Margaret McLean: We have already noted that the imprint date of the Bible is 1852, so we now know that it must have been bought after the marriage of Royal W. Wellington and Martha Elizabeth Foster Wellington. I am of the opinion that this Bible was not actually bought by the Wellingtons until AFTER the birth of their first child, Thomas Ruffin Albert Wellington, who was born "Aug. 30th, 1852." We can assume that, as soon as they got the Bible after the birth of their son, Martha Elizabeth Wellington entered, not only the son's birth, but also the date of the marriage of herself and Royal W. Wellington. Her descendants will always owe her a debt of gratitude!]

[Entry 8, in the handwriting of Margaret Stoner McLean:]

Royal Clinton Stoner and Robbie Mae Scruggs, married December 27, 1958, Laurel Heights Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas.

[Entry 9, in the handwriting of Margaret Stoner McLean:]

[Entry 10, in the handwriting of Rev. Frank B. Walker, Presbyterian minister who performed the marriage. It was recorded by Rev. Walker, at the request of Margaret Stoner McLean, who had brought the Wellington- Stoner Family Bible from Arlington, Texas, for the purpose of having the marriage recorded in it.]

Michael Lowery Stoner and Roann D. Cartwright married Monday, October 12, 1987, at the Big Tree Ranch, Uvalde County, by Rev. Frank B. Walker.

[Entry 11, in the handwriting of Rev. Frank B. Walker, Presbyterian minister who performed the marriage. It was recorded by Rev. Walker, at the request of Margaret Stoner McLean, who had brought the Wellington- Stoner Family Bible from Arlington, Texas, to the Montell Methodist Church for the purpose of having the marriage recorded in it:]

Bob Louis McCracken and Jamie Louise Stoner married Saturday, July 22, 1989, at Montell Methodist Church by Rev. Frank Walker.

[Entry 12, in the handwriting of Amy Stoner when she visited Margaret Stoner McLean in Georgetown, Texas, the first time following her marriage. Because of health problems, Margaret and Malcolm McLean had been unable to attend the wedding, which took place in the beautiful Pecan Bottom, on the Nueces River, near the site of the first home of Anna Louisa Wellington Stoner in Uvalde County.

[In 1913, the Nueces River flooded this area, washing away the house in which Anna W. Stoner lived, but they saved some of its contents because the house caught between large pecan trees and did not break up and become lost in the river. Among some of the things which were saved, because they had been placed on the large oak dining room table before the house was abandoned, was the trunk containing very old family papers dating from the migration of the Ligon- Foster families from Virginia to Tennessee, to Arkansas, in the 1820s, and the Wellington migration from Arkansas to Texas in the 1850s. This Family Bible was saved, along with the trunk full of papers.]

[Margaret Stoner McLean has now deposited the family papers and pictures in the Texas Collection of Baylor University, Waco, Texas, where they may be researched both by family members and by other researchers, for the better understanding of who we are, and why we are proud to be Texans.]

[It was because Amy and Gil Stoner chose to have their wedding performed at this historic site of the first Stoner home on the ranch bought by Anna Wellington Stoner in 1884, that Margaret McLean wanted Amy to record her own marriage in the Bible. It completed the last available space on the "Marriages" page of the Bible, and future weddings will have to be recorded on supplemental pages Margaret has had made.]

[Entry 12, in Amy Stoner's handwriting, reads:]

Gilbert Joseph Stoner and Amy Rose Anderson married Saturday, May 28, 1994, at the Stoner Ranch, by Reverend Stan Troy.

[Note by Margaret Stoner McLean: It is my belief that the above entry and the one on the death of Mrs. M. E. Wellington, were both written in blue ink at the same time. I also think that, knowing the circumstances at the time of the birth of William Clinton Stoner, and at the time of the death of Martha E. Wellington, both dates were written at a later date than Dec. 27, 1886, when Martha E. Wellington died. Also, no other entries were made by Anna Louisa Stoner in that same color of ink.]

Chandler Thomas Stoner, born Oct. xx, 1992. Second son of Thomas Overton Stoner and Jackie Curtis Stoner.

[Entry 20, in the handwriting of Margaret Stoner McLean. : This entry had to be placed on another sheet headed "Births," because the original Bible sheets had all been filled when the birth of Chandler Thomas Stoner was entered. Much earlier, when Malcolm D. McLean was still at The University of Texas at Arlington, as Director of the Robertson Colony Collection, he had his secretary to prepare new supplemental "Birth" sheets, using type and border decorations on paper as nearly like the original sheets as possible. The first entry on the supplemental sheet reads:]

Carson Michael Stoner, Born November xx, 1996. Weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces. Third son of Thomas Overton Stoner and Jackie Curtis Stoner.

(Note, Birthdates of living family members removed for finantial security reasons)

DEATHS
[Entry 1, in the handwriting of Martha Elizabeth Foster Wellington, and one added word in the handwriting of Anna Louisa Wellington Stoner, as noted below: Royal W. Wellington (with the word "Doctor" written in blue ink above the name "Royal." This was written, I believe, by Anna W. Stoner at a later date, and in the same blue ink she used to enter the death of "Mrs. M. E. Wellington" and "William Clinton Stoner." This complete entry now reads:]

Doctor Royal W. Wellington Died March 26, 1875 aged 59 yrs. 8 ms. 8 days

[Entry 2, in the handwriting of Martha Elizabeth Foster Wellington:]

Thomas R. A. Wellington Died March 31, 1883, 1/2 past 11 Oclk. Aged 30 yrs. 7 mo 1 day

[Entry 3, in the handwriting of Martha Elizabeth Wellington:]

W. Clinton Stoner Died Jan. 30th, 1884 Aged 31 yrs 5 mo 24 days

[Entry 4, in the handwriting of Anna W. Stoner:]

Mrs. M. E. Wellington died Dec. 27th, 1886. Aged 64 yrs. 4 mo. 13 days.

[Further note by Margaret Stoner McLean: I believe that Anna W. Stoner did not make any of these entries in this same blue ink until a much later date, because her life was extremely difficult from January 30, 1884, through the birth of her third child, Clinton, March 6, 1884, through her move from Edwards County to the present Stoner Ranch in Uvalde County in October, 1884, and then the death of her mother, Martha Elizabeth Foster Wellington, on December 27, 1886.]

[Entry 5, in the handwriting of Anna W. Stoner, but going back to black ink, she wrote:]

Wm. Clinton Stoner Died Aug. 9th, 1902 aged 18 years 5 months and 3 days. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God."

[Entry 6, in the handwriting of Anna W. Stoner, but again in blue ink, is written:]

Hope Stoner Beaumont Died June 13 1942 Aged, 63 yrs. l mo. 21 days.

[Entry 7, in the handwriting of Margaret Stoner McLean:]

Anna Louisa Wellington Stoner died July 10, 1953. Aged. - 96 years, 5 months, and 23 days.

[Entry 8, in the handwriting of Mamie Victoria Stoner:]

Thomas Royal Stoner died March 28th, 1960 Age 79 yrs [deleted: 9] 3 month

[Entry 9, in the handwriting of Margaret Stoner McLean:]

Mamie Victoria Stoner, wife of Thomas Royal Stoner, died January 22, 1974 age 88 years, 4 months, & 18 days.

[Entry 10 had to be entered on a supplemental sheet headed "Deaths", because the original sheets in the Bible had all been filled at the time of the death of Mamie Victoria Stoner in 1974. Entry 10 has now been set up to record the death of Bonnie Langenberg Stoner, first wife of Michael Lowery Stoner. Through an oversight, it was not entered in the Bible records at the time of her death, a fact which was not noticed until January, 1997, when Margaret Stoner McLean prepared to make a complete transcription of the records to send to all the decendents of Anna Louisa Wellington Stoner. The following entry was made at that time:]

Bonnie Langenberg Stoner died December 5, 1965, age 51 years. She was the first wife of Michael Lowery Stoner. They were married in Bandera, Texas, July 8, 1958.
