Muriel was drafted into the Army on November 17, 1944.  He asked to be put into the Marines, but was put into the Army Infantry and received Infantry training at Camp Walters, Texas.  He trained for 17 weeks and was then given a furlough on his way to overseas duty in Europe.  Muriel was in Fort Mead, Maryland at the time President Roosevelt died and a short time later, on April 28, 1945, he was shipped out of Boston to Europe as a replacement.  While in Germany he was assigned to the 81st Combat Engineer Battalion attached to the 106th Infantry Division.  He did not get to the front lines as the War in Europe ended.  Muriel spent 17 months with the Occupation Forces spending most of his time as a Military Policeman (M.P.) assigned to the 389th Military Police Batallion working in traffic control at the Port of Le Harve, France.  He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on February 20, 1946.  He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, the World War II Victory medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and two Overseas Service Bars.  Muriel returned to the U.S. on August 11, 1946 and was discharge from the Army at the Fort Sam Houston Separation Center on August 21, 1946.
