Heinrich Steubing Sr. Family history reports that Heinrich Steubing was "coerced" into joining the ranks of the Confederate forces during the Civil War. It is not known at this time to which unit Heinrich was attached.
The family history also says he was taken prisoner by the Union forces and held in a prison in Maryland. He subsequently escaped from the prison and returned to Texas, traveling by night to escape detection and recapture. The largest Union prisoner of war camp was located at Point Lookout, Maryland. This may be the prison where Heinrich was held. Heinrich declared on the 1910 U.S. Census that he had served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. No other documentation of his service has been found to date. |
(Research is continuing on Heinrich Steubing's service history. Further information will be added as it is uncovered).
