Rev. Jack T. Slaughter (1929-1993)
Born November 11, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, Pastor Jack T. Slaughter is the son of E. T. Slaughter. He graduated from Texas Lutheran College, Seguin, Texas in June 1951 and was married to Joy Lee McKinney June 15, 1952. He subsequently graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary and was ordained a pastor of the American Lutheran Church June 20, 1954. His first assignment was pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Sweetwater, Texas where he served two years before coming to Zion of Helotes.
Pastor Slaughter is remembered for his gifts of pastoral care and counseling. He was very effective in bringing new members into the congregation with 38 adult confirmations during his pastorate.
During Pastor Slaughter’s ministry at Zion, the "News Letter" was instituted, the Youth Choir was organized, the Youth Room was dedicated on October 25, 1959 and the two choirs were robed for the first time.
Pastor Slaughter’s final sermon at Zion was a "Service of Song" on August 27, 1961. He left Zion to pursue Clinical Pastoral Training at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Houston, Texas and San Antonio State Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. After completion of training he served as Institutional Chaplain at Ft. Logan Mental Health Center, Denver, Colorado. In 1975 he was Chaplain Supervisor, Ft. Logan. He also served as Chairman, the Department of Hospital Ministry, Denver Area Council of Churches and Vice-Chairman, Colorado Chaplains Association.
Rev. Slaughter maintained his touch with parish life during the years as Chaplain by serving as supply pastor to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Wildhorse, Colorado from 1969 to November 1975.
Rev. Jack T. Slaughter died in Denver, Colorado on November 5, 1993.
