Erwin J. "Mutz" Steubing, Jr.

July 16, 1927 - June 28, 2000

Erwin J. "Mutz" Steubing, Jr., was born July 16, 1927, the third of five children born to Erwin J. and Alvina Steubing, Sr., here in Bexar County.  He was baptized into the Christian faith, and Christ his Lord, when the preacher from Castroville came to his parent's ranch for the baptism.  He was a life-long member of this congregation, Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes.  When he was 11, his mother died---and that had a profound influence on his life, and his sense of really being loved.  His older sister, Esther, pretty much took his mother's place at that point, for which he was always so grateful.  He graduated from Burbank High School, and joined the Navy in the midst of WWII.  While in the Navy he saw action in the South Pacific.

After being released from the Navy in June of 1946, he met Jo Anna Page in November 1946, and they were married on April 11, 1947.  Terry and Lee Anna soon rounded out the family.

In 1948, E.J. went to work for H.B. Zachry, a career that would last for 42 years.  E.J. loved his work with Zachry and was in charge of several massive counstruction projects.  After retirement around 1990, he and Jo Anna enjoyed traveling, and he was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish.

E.J. could be a very demanding person, but also had a soft inside and heart of gold, especially for any who needed assistance or help.  After a valiant fight with concer, he died in the Lord this past Wednesday morning, at the age of 72.

E.J. was preceded in death by son-in-law, Dale Hurt; and brothers, Calvin Steubing and Glenn Steubing.  He is survived by his wife, Jo Anna Page Steubing, son and daughter-in-law Terry and Margaret Steubing, daughter Lee Anna Steubing; four grandchildren, Shawn and Dustin Steubing, and Jessica and Joshua Hurt; by great grandson Eric Steubing; and by sisters Esther Heyer and Violet Bryden.
