
The following obituary is an abbreviated version of the one that was written by Pastor Paul Probst and a part of the bulletin at Worship Service at St. Paul Lutheran in Rosenberg, January 22, 1987.
Caroline Marie nee Hoermann Probst was born on December 10, 1922 in La Grange, Texas, the second child of Rev. and Mrs. M. C. Hoermann. She was baptized by her own father in infancy.
She graduated from Cuero High School, and then attended Southwest Texas State College where she received her Bachelor's Degree. After teaching in the public schools in Brenham, she began work for the Division of American Missions of the National Lutheran council and was assigned to Orange, Texas.
Caroline and Paul Probst were married in Trinity Lutheran Church, the ALC congregation in Orange of which Paul was the Pastor, on August 14, 1946. She taught school for several years in Orange, and later also served as a substitute teacher. After thirteen years in Orange, the Probsts received a call to Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Ft. Worth.
Caroline was always involved in the work of the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, the Altar Guild, and the Women's organizations. In Ft. Worth she was a member of the United Council of Church Women. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women. She served as instructor in the training sessions for Sunday School teachers and also in the Vacation Bible School clinics of the Northeast Conference.
Emanuel Lutheran Church of Stuttgart, Arkansas was the next congregation in which the Probsts moved. While in Stuttgart, Caroline was elected as President of the Northeast Conference of the American Lutheran Church Women. She wrote articles for the "Southern Lutheran" and also for the "Scope", the official magazine of the ALCW.
In their last parish, Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes, she was active in all areas in which she loved to serve. At Zion she also served for a while as part-time secretary.
The Probsts had been in retirement for three years living in their home in Holiday Beach near Rockport-Fulton.
Caroline was preceded in death by her mother, who died as a result of child-birth; by her brother, Fred Henry; by her sister, Mrs. Ruth Schroeder; and by her father, Martin C. Hoermann. She is survived by her husband, Paul; by her step-mother, Mrs. M. C. Hoermann of Corpus Christi; by two step-brothers, Ferdinand and Nathanael; by a step-sister, Evangeline of Corpus Christi; by several nieces and in-laws.
