Bertie C. Potter, Sr.

Bertie C. Potter, Sr., who was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes for 50 years, passed away in a nursing home on May 6, 1990 at the age of 79.  He had suffered a stroke in 1989, the day after his 57th wedding anniversary.  Mr. Potter was born December 19, 1910 in Boerne and grew up there before moving to San Antonio at age 17.  He married Theresa Yecker August 25, 1932 in San Antonio.  He worked for the Bexar County Precinct 2 Commissioner for 40 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1973 and building a home at Canyon Lake.  "He enjoyed life very much," said his daughter Shirley Coggeshall of San Antonio.  "Everybody who met him liked him."  He moved to Canyon Lake after he retired and went fishing almost every day as he was an avid fisherman.  On the day he had his stroke, he had been fishing.  "He enjoyed his children and grandchildren and helped them.  He took his grandchildren deer hunting in Fredericksburg."  According to his daughter Diane Lindsey, her father was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church choir for 15 years and was considered an excellent dancer.  His great-great-uncle, Robert Potter, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.  His great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Potter, was known as the "fighting parson" and started Methodist churches in Boerne, Bandera, San Angelo and Lockart.  Other survivors, all of San Antonio, are his wife; a son, B. C. Potter, Jr., and another daughter, Peggy Krcha; two sisters, Lucille McWhorter and Dorothy Brown; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Services were held Tuesday, May 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Helotes with burial in the church cemetery.  Arrangements by Roy Akers Funeral Home.
