Geneva Lee (Moehring) Masters, a native of Hondo, loved to assist others, was an avid runner and gifted musician, and dedicated her life to helping children read. Neva, as she was known to her many friends, died late Wednesday night from a sudden, massive heart attack. She was 56. Valedictorian of the Hondo High School class of 1964, Neva went on to receive a B.A. degree from Texas Lutheran College and a M.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio, both in Elementary Education. Masters was a reading specialist for 32 years and touched young lives in the Seguin, Hondo, South San Antonio, and Northside school districts. Neva was also a gifted musician, becoming a church organist at 16. She had played almost every Sunday since at her home congregation and joined Women's Circles, was a choir director, and even served as youth group sponsor. Neva took up running in 1976 to stay in shape after her children were born and ran 4-5 miles every morning and again every evening. Though she had never run competitively, Neva had signed up for the 'Train for Stroke' marathon benefiting the newly formed American Stroke Association. Above all else, Neva reached out to many in quiet, unseen, Christ-like ways and was tireless in looking for ways to help others. Neva loved to tell about praying for something then finding shooting stars when she ran in the mornings they reminded her of God's love and presence in the world. Now she's got a star of her own. She is survived by her husband, Russell Lee Masters and daughter, Kelly Shannon Masters, both of San Antonio; son, Dallas Shane Masters of Boulder, CO; Herbert and Lillian Moehring, her father and mother of Hondo, TX; two sisters, Doris Ann Menke and Joyce Marie Herring of San Antonio. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes. A Graveside Service will follow at Hondo Cemetery, Hondo, TX with a reception immediately afterwards at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi, TX. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center of San Antonio or the American Stroke Association. Guinn-Horger Funeral Home.
