Kneupper Worked at Printing Shops

Comfort -- Robert Kneupper, a printer and typesetter in San Antonio, worked for the Carroll and Fair printing companies more than 40 years.  Kneupper, 80, died Saturday at the Hill country Hospital of a respiratory illness.  He was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Selma and attended Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, said his daughter, Jane Roach of San Antonio.  "He went to work as a printer and did it his whole life," Roach said.  "He took great pride in his work."  Kneupper met and married Helen Michalezak in 1935.  She died in 1964.  The couple had three children.

Drafted by Navy -- Kneupper worked for Carroll until the Navy drafted him in 1945.  He served in the Navy as a printer in Washington, D.C., and was released early at the end of 1945 because he had three children.  Kneupper went back to work for Carroll when he returned to San Antonio, and he worked there until the mid-1950s, his daughter said.  He worked for the Fair Printing Co. from the mid 1950s until his retirement in 1974.  Kneupper was an excellent craftsman and loved to work with wood, his daughter said.  "He made cabinets and furniture in his garage," she said. "It was a lifelong hobby and he did it well.  Whenever he did something, he did it well."  After retirement, Kneupper enjoyed woodworking, raising chickens and gradening.

Did carpentry work -- He did part-time carpentry work for contractors in comfort, his daughter said.  "People appreciated his work and respected him for it," his daughter said.  Kneupper was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Comfort.  Survivors include his wife; two other daughters, Verlyn Loest of Fredericksburg and Judith Bullington of San Antonio; two brothers, Roland Kneupper of New Braunfells and Olin Kneupper of San Antonio; a sister, Jeannette Hencey of San Antonio; and 10 grandchildren.  Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Windecker officiating.  Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Helotes.
