JONAS

Cecil Goll Jonas, worked alongside her husband at whatever he did.  Always together, they milded cows next to each other at various dairies around the Helotes area in their younger years.  Later they both ran Jonas Bar and Cafe in Macdona from 1964 to 1978.  She died Tuesday at age 66, suffering a stroke after surgery.
She was born in Bandera and came to San Antonio with her parents when she was very small.  She attended Edgewood School before she was married to Herbert Jonas on May 6, 1938.
"My mother was an outdoors-type person," said her daughter, Ellen Loessberg of Lacoste.  "She enjoyed gardening, fishing, nature, livestock and scenery.  She also liked to cook and eat," she said.  "As a participant in menudo and chili cookoffs in Macdona and Lacoste, she has won first and second prizes.  Her recipe was called grandma's chili, but she never told us her secret ingredient.  Often she would make up a pot of chili or menudo at their cafe in Macdona and give it to the customers."
The couple ran the business for 14 years until he had a stroke in 1978.  A relative took it over then, and the cafe is still in the family.  The Jonases moved to Natalia after he was stricken.  He died Jan. 20, 1985.
"My mother enjoyed being around people and was very family oriented." the daughter said.  "She wanted her children to all stay together.  She tried to keep us out of trouble."  Her nieces and nephews respected her as much as her own children." she said, "and she expended a great deal of effort in their behalf.
