Galm founded local 4-H clubs

Louise Engelhardt Galm founded the Bexar County, Mackey and Belgium Gardens 4-H clubs.  "It originally started out to help youngsters in agriculture," said her son, Harold "Butch" Galm of San Antonio.  "It's a national organization, but she started the ones in Bexar County."  Galm died of a heart attaack Thursday at home.  She was 75.  A San Antonio native, Galm graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934.  She married Harold Frank Galm in 1941 in Helotes.  They bought a farm and raised livestock and poultry, her son said.     Did bookkeeping     "She did all the bookkeeping and records required," he said.  "She was a homemaker and raised four kids."  Galm's children also were involved in 4-H programs and raised turkeys for a project.  The son said the project that began with 20 turkeys developed into a business that eventually sold more than 3,000 turkeys a year for 14 years.  "We went from a 4-H project to a business," he said. "She directed us and she encouraged us.  She tried to get us to pursue the 4-H."  In 1968, Galm received the Texas and Bexar County 4-H Distinguished Leadership awards.  From 1965 to 1982, she was a volunteer secretary for the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show.  The 26th annual Junior Livestock Show was dedicated to her.  "She was always willing to help or assist where anything was needed," her sons said.  "She believed in youth participation.  All of us were involved."  Galm was a nine-year member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes Women's Club and was president for one year.  From 1952 to 1971 she taught Sunday school. "She was very interested in all forms of church work," her son said.  "She would do a lot of baking and canning and sell them at the church picnic.  It was a lot of work, but that's what she enjoyed doing."  Her husband died in 1969.  Besides her son she is survived by three daughters, Carol Carter, Teddie Lou Stephens and Fern Castillo, all of San Antonio; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.  A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in Zizik-Kearns Riebe-Saunders Chapel.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Helotes with the Rev. Gordon Kuenemann and the Rev. Peter Manfred officiating.  Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
