Clarence M. Galm dies at age 80

Clarence M. Galm, often called the father of the Northside School District, died Sept. 23 at the age of 80.  In 1949, Galm led an effort to consolidate four rural school districts in order to build Northside High School, now John Marshall High School.  Galm served on the Helotes School Board at the time and pushed for a consolidation election to unite four schools -- Leon Valley, Helotes, Leon Springs and Lockhill.  Until that time, many rural school children had to end their education at the seventh grade because there was no local high school, and they could not afford transportation to San Antonio.  Galm led a petition drive and the consolidation was overwhelmingly approed by area residents.  An elementary school bearing his name was recently built in the Westcreek subdivison and opened last month.  A retired dairy farmer, Galm was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes, Leon Valley Grange, Bexar County Farm Bureau and the Leon Valley Historical Society.  He is survived by his wife, Hazel F. Galm of Helotes; sister, Mrs. Lillian Liaus of San Antonio; and brother, Fred Galm of Utah.
