Robert Brauchle, a former teacher and counselor, died Saturday of lung failure. He was 88.

Debbie Brauchle said her father always stressed the importance of education, and he would often bring home the latest educational materials. "He was an educator above all else," she said.

Brauchle earned a bachelor's of science in vocational agriculture from Texas A&M in 1938 and a master's in education from the University of Texas. His teaching career began in San Antonio in 1940 at what is now Burbank High School, where he taught vocational agriculture.

When the United States entered World War II, Brauchle put his teaching career on hold and joined the Army in 1942. He served with the U.S. Army infantry in the European Campaign and received a European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a captain.

After the war, Brauchle took a job in Atascosa County as an instructor in an educational training program for veterans. In 1952, he began teaching science and counseling students at what is now MacArthur High School; he remained on the staff for 14 years and was in charge of science education.

After leaving MacArthur, Brauchle worked as a counselor and as the director of test and measurements at Trinity University. He helped students decide on career fields and administered entrance exams. Before his retirement in 1985, Brauchle was instrumental in organizing the university's office for counseling and career services.

Born in Helotes on Jan. 22, 1915, Brauchle graduated from San Antonio's Jefferson High School. Although he earned a degree from the University of Texas, his family said he remained a diehard Aggie. Brauchle's hobbies included racing homing pigeons, hunting, fishing and gardening. Phyllis Dodic said her father was a devoted Christian and family man. "He was like the captain of our ship, just keeping us together as a family," she said. "He was our rock."

In addition to his two daughters, Brauchle is survived by his wife of 54 years, Annelda "Kit" Brauchle; another daughter, Robbie Kothmann; a son, Henry Brauchle; a foster son, Herbert Sepper, all of San Antonio; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Porter Loring Mortuaries, 1101 McCullough Ave. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church, followed by a procession to Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes, which will end at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
