Windows 98 Dial-Up Networking Setup

Windows 98 provides all the networking software you need to connect to the Internet through Texas.Net. Windows can be configured to allow access to any Internet activities available including World Wide Web access, e-mail, FTP, and newsgroups. But first, you will need to configure Dial-up Networking to connect to Texas.Net. The setup instructions below will help you to configure your system and get online.

System Setup

These instructions will serve to help you configure Windows 98 to use the Internet through Texas.Net. You may need your Windows 98 installation CD-ROM

PART A - Configuring Your System

If you're on a Local Area Network (LAN), consult with your local Network Administrator (not us) before attempting setup. If you're computer is not on a local network, it is safe to proceed.
  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the 'Network' icon.
    You must have at least three items listed in order to connect to Texas.Net: 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP'. If you're missing...
    • Dial-Up Adapter
      Click on Add, select 'Adapter' and click on Add.
      Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Dial-Up Adapter' on the right.
      Click on OK.
    • Client for Microsoft Networks
      Click on 'Add', select 'Client'
      and click on 'Add'. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left and 'Client for
      Microsoft Networks' on the right. Click on 'OK'.
    • TCP/IP
      Click on 'Add', select 'Protocol' and click on 'Add'.
      Choose 'Microsoft' on the left and 'TCP/IP' on the right.
      Click on OK.
  3. If you have listed 'Client for Netware Networks', 'IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol' and/or 'NetBEUI', click on each one in turn and click on 'Remove' to remove it.
  4. If the 'Primary Network Logon' is 'Client for Microsoft Networks', please change it to 'Windows Logon'.
  5. Double-click on 'Client for Microsoft Networks' in the installed components list.
  6. Make sure nothing is checked under 'Logon validation'. Under 'Network logon options', select 'Quick Login'. Click on 'OK'.
  7. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Adapter'. Click on the 'Bindings' tab. Only 'TCP/IP' should be checked there. Click on 'OK'.
  8. Double-click on 'TCP/IP'. A warning message will appear advising that "You have asked to change TCP/IP properties for a dial-up adapter." Click 'OK' on this message.
    • Under the 'IP Address' tab:
      Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
    • Under the 'WINS Configuration' tab:
      Select 'Disable WINS Resolution'.
    • Under the 'Gateway' tab:
      Verify that the box under 'Installed Gateways' is empty. If you have anything listed there, select it and click on 'Remove'.
    • Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab:
      At 'Host', enter a name for your computer consisting of a single word (your username would work just fine in this entry).
      For 'Domain', type: texas.net
    • Under 'DNS Server Search Order':
      If you are dialing into our Austin, Georgetown, Dripping Springs, Houston Spring, Dallas, or Fort Worth lines, type 207.207.0.3 and click on 'Add', then type 206.127.0.3 and click on 'Add' again.
      If you are dialing into our San Antonio, Boerne, Bandera, or New Braunfels lines, type 206.127.0.3 and click on 'Add', then type 207.207.0.3 and click on 'Add' again.
    • Under 'Domain Suffix Search Order':
      Type texas.net and click on 'Add'.
  9. Click on 'OK'.
  10. Click on the 'Identification' tab. Enter your username in the 'Computer Name' field, and make sure the fields for 'Workgroup' and 'Computer Description' are completed (they don't need to be anything specific, just filled in).
  11. Click on 'OK'. Restart your computer, even if you are not prompted to do so.

PART B - Configuring Your Internet Explorer For Use With Texas.Net

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Control Panel', then double-click on 'Internet'
  3. Click on the 'Connection' tab, make sure that 'Connect to the Internet using a modem' is selected, then click on 'Settings'.
  4. Click on 'Add'.
  5. When asked to enter a name for this connection, enter 'Texas.Net' or something that you will remember for future reference. Select your modem and click on 'Next'.
  6. Enter the area code and phone number for your Texas.Net connection. Numbers are listed on your Startup Kit. Click on 'Next'.
  7. Click on 'Finish'.
  8. Click on 'Properties'.
  9. If 'Use country code and area code' is selected, deselect it.
  10. Click on the 'Server Type' tab and verify that all of the settings listed here are correct:
    • Type of Dial-Up Server:
      'PPP; Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98'
    • Advanced Options:
      'Enable Software Compression' should be checked.
      (Nothing else here should be checked.)
    • Allowed Network Protocols:
      'TCP/IP' should be checked.
      (Nothing else here should be checked.)
  11. Click on 'TCP/IP Settings'.
    • 'Server Assigned IP Address' should be selected.
    • 'Specify Name Server Addresses' should be selected.
    • If you are dialing into our Austin, Georgetown, Dripping Springs, Houston, Spring, Dallas, or Fort Worth lines, type 207.207.0.3 for Primary DNS, then type 206.127.0.3 for Secondary DNS.
    • If you are dialing into our San Antonio, Boerne, Bandera or New Braunfels lines, type 206.127.0.3 for Primary DNS, then type 207.207.0.3 for Secondary DNS.
    • 'Use IP Header Compression' and 'Use Default Gateway' should be checked.
  12. Click on 'OK', click on 'OK', click on 'OK' again, and then click on the 'General' tab at the top of the 'Internet Properties' window.
  13. Type 'http://lonestar.texas.net/' in the 'Address' dialog box, and then click 'Apply' and then click on 'OK' again, and close all of the open windows

PART C - Connecting to Texas.Net

  1. Double-click on your 'Internet Explorer'.
  2. Enter your username as it appears on your confirmation packet.
  3. Enter your password exactly as it appears in your confirmation packet. Watch for 'L's that look like '1's (ones) and 'O's that look like '0's (zeros). Usually, your initial Texas.Net password will not contain any ones or zeros. Also, check to be sure that you're typing capital and lower-case letters appropriately.

    Some installations of Windows will allow you to check the 'Save Password' field, which will allow you to connect to Texas.Net in the future without having to re-enter your password. Normally, this option will become available after your first successful connection with Texas.Net.

  4. Click on Connect. This will dial and connect you to the Internet. Once connected, you may then launch any Internet applications you have on your computer in addition to the Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Configuring Your E-mail

This document will help you configure Microsoft's Outlook Express as your e-mail client. If you have an 'Outlook Express' icon on your desktop, you already have Microsoft's Outlook Express installed on your computer. If this is the case, skip to PART B.

PART A - Installing Outlook Express

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Control Panel', then double-click on 'Add/Remove Programs'.
  3. Click on the 'Windows Setup' tab, scroll down until you see the 'Microsoft Outlook Express' entry.
  4. Select the 'Microsoft Outlook Express' box by clicking on it. A check should appear in the box.
  5. Click on 'Apply', then click on 'OK'.
  6. 'Outlook Express' is now installed on your computer. Close all of the open windows, you may now see an 'Outlook Express' icon on your desktop. Proceed to PART B.

PART B - Outlook Express Setup

  1. Double-click the 'Outlook Express' icon on your desktop, proceed to step 2. If you do not have an 'Outlook Express' icon on your desktop, click on 'Start | Programs | Internet Explorer | Outlook Express'.
  2. A 'Browse for Folder' screen may appear. Click 'OK'. If this screen does not appear, proceed to step 3.
  3. The 'Internet Connection Wizard' for 'Setting up Internet Mail' should appear. If it does not appear, proceed to step 4. If it does appear, proceed to step 5.
  4. Click on 'Tools', and then 'Accounts'. From the 'Internet Accounts' menu that pops up, click on the 'Mail' tab. Click on 'Add', and then 'Mail'. Skip to step 6.
  5. Click on 'Create a new Internet mail account', then click 'Next'.
  6. Type your name in the 'Display name' field, then click 'Next'.
  7. Enter your full e-mail address (username@texas.net) in the 'E-mail address' field, then click 'Next'.
  8. Make sure 'POP3' is selected on the 'E-mail Server Names' field.
  9. Type pop.texas.net in the 'Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server' field.
  10. Type mail.texas.net in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' field, then click 'Next'.
  11. Make sure 'Log on using' is selected, then enter your login name (as it appears on your Startup Kit) in the 'POP account name' field, and then enter your password into the 'Password' field.
  12. Click 'Next'.
  13. Click 'Next' on the 'Friendly Name' screen.
  14. Select 'Connect using my phone line' from the 'Choose Connection Type' screen, click 'Next'.
  15. Select 'Use an existing dial-up connection'. Make sure to highlight (single-click on ) your Texas.Net connection, then click 'Next'.
  16. Click 'Finish' on the 'Congratulations' screen.
  17. Click 'Send and Receive' to check your Texas.Net e-mail account!

Netscape Communicator

You can also install Netscape Communicator if you prefer to use it as your WWW browser. The following steps will help you setup the Netscape Communicator version 4.61 as your World Wide Web browser.

PART A - Downloading Netscape Communicator

  1. Connect to Texas.Net using Windows' Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Open your MS-DOS Prompt (Click on Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt).
  3. Type ftp ftp.netscape.com then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard.
  4. At the 'User (ftp.netscape.com:(none)):' prompt, type ftp then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard.
  5. At the 'Password:' prompt, type your e-mail address (username@texas.net) then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard. Note: you will not see your e-mail address as you type it - this is normal.
  6. At the 'ftp>' prompt, type bin (then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard). You should receive the message 'Type set to I.'.
  7. At the 'ftp>' prompt, type hash (then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard). You should receive the message 'Hash mark printing On (2048 bytes/hash mark)'
  8. Type cd /pub/communicator/4.6/english/windows/windows95_or_nt/complete_install You should receive the message 'CWD Command Successful'.
  9. Type get cc32e46.exe and hit 'Enter'.
  10. You should receive the message 'Opening BINARY mode data connection...' At this point, the download is beginning. Depending on your modem speed, this should take anywhere from 35 to 60 minutes. When the download is complete, you should get a message saying 'Transfer complete'.
  11. At the ftp> prompt, type quit (then strike the 'Enter' key on the keyboard) to exit the FTP program.

PART B - Installing Netscape Communicator

  1. Click on 'Start | Run'.
  2. Type C:\windows\cc32e46.exe
  3. Click 'Next' to run the Netscape Communicator 4.6 Setup.
  4. Click 'Yes'.
  5. Click 'Next'.
  6. Click 'OK' if previous Navigator was detected.
  7. Click 'Next' on the Desktop Preference Options.
  8. Click 'Next', then click 'Install'.
  9. Click 'Yes' to view the README file.
  10. Close the README file, then click 'OK'.
  11. You must restart for changes to take effect. Click 'OK'.

PART C - Creating a New Profile

  1. Double-click the 'Netscape Communicator' icon no your desktop.
  2. Click 'Next'.
  3. Type your Texas.Net username into the 'Profile Name' field, then click 'Next'.
  4. Click on 'Ignore existing files', then click 'Next'.
  5. Type your name and your Texas.Net e-mail address (username@texas.net) into each appropriate field, then click 'Next'.
  6. Type mail.texas.net for outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
  7. Type your Texas.Net login name in the 'Mail server user name' field.
  8. Type pop.texas.net for incoming (POP3) mail server.
  9. Make sure 'POP3' is selected, then click 'Next'.
  10. Type news.texas.net for news (NNTP) server, leave other options as is, click 'Next'.
  11. Click 'Finish'.
After the installation, you will have a Netscape Communicator icon on your desktop. Double click on this icon once you have gone through the steps of Connecting to Texas.Net. To send or receive e-mail go to Communicator then Messenger. To send or receive news articles go to Communicator then Newsgroups.
