Downloading the Netscape Navigator (optional)
You can download a copy of the latest Netscape release now by visiting
Netscape's
download page.
Once you've successfully installed Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can
optionally install Netscape Navigator if you prefer to use it as your
WWW browser. The following steps will install the latest version of
Netscape Navigator, currently version 4.06, as your World-Wide Web
browser.
PART A - Downloading Netscape Navigator
- Connect to Texas.Net using Windows 95/NT's Dial-Up Networking.
- Open your MS-DOS Prompt (Click on Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt).
- Type ftp ftp.netscape.com
- At the "User (ftp.netscape.com:(none)):" prompt, type ftp
- At the "Password:" prompt, type your e-mail address
(yourlogin@texas.net)
- At the "ftp>" prompt, type bin
You should
receive the message "Type set to I."
- Type hash
You should receive the message "Hash
mark printing On (2048 bytes/hash mark)"
- Type (do not break lines as shown)
cd pub/navigator/4.06/shipping/english/
windows/windows95_or_nt/base_install
You should receive the message "CWD Command Successful".
- Type get cb32e406.exe
- You should receive the message "Opening BINARY mode data
connection..." At this point, the download is beginning. Depending on
your modem speed this should take anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes. When
downloading is complete, you should get a message saying "Transfer
complete."
- At the "ftp>" prompt, type quit to exit the FTP program.
PART B - Installing Netscape Navigator
- Click on 'Start | Run'
- Type c:\windows\cb32e406.exe
- Click on 'Ok'
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Yes' to the License Agreement.
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Next'
- Click 'Yes' to view the README file
- Click 'Ok'
After the installation and a required reboot, you will have a Netscape
icon on your desktop. Double click on this icon once you have gone
through the steps of Connecting to Texas.Net.
PART C - Setting Up Netscape Mail and News
- Click on 'Accept' at the bottom of the License Agreement
- Click 'Ok' to use default bookmarks
- Select 'Edit | Preferences'
- Click on the 'Mail & Groups' section
- Under 'Identity', fill in your name and your e-mail address
(login@texas.net).
- Under 'Mail Server', fill in 'Mail server user name' with your
login name, 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server' with
mail.texas.net, and 'Incoming mail server' with
pop.texas.net.
- Under 'Groups Server', fill in news.texas.net for
'Discussion groups (news) server'.
- Click 'Ok'
To send and receive e-mail go to Window then Netscape Mail. To send or
receive news articles, go to Window then Netscape News.
