Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mail, And News Setup

You can download a copy of the latest MSIE release now by visiting Microsoft's Internet Explorer home page.

This document will serve to help you install Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 3.02, as your World-Wide Web (WWW) browser. If you installed your dial-up networking using the Internet Setup Wizard (the Internet icon on your desktop), you already have the Microsoft Internet Explorer installed on your computer. If this is the case, you can skip these instructions and proceed to explore the Internet simply by double-clicking on your Internet icon. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download a copy of MSIE. If you wish to use the Netscape Navigator rather than MSIE, we still recommend you download MSIE. The installation will add Internet functionality to Windows 95/NT and make connecting to the Internet much easier.

If you are using Windows 98, then IE4 is already installed on your computer and the following instructions are not needed.

PART A - Downloading Microsoft Internet Explorer

  1. Connect to Texas.Net using Windows 95's or Windows NT 4.0's Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Open your MS-DOS Prompt (Click on 'Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt').
  3. Type: ftp tucows.c-com.net
  4. At the "User (tucows.c-com.net:(none)):" prompt, type ftp.
  5. At the "Password:" prompt, type your e-mail address (yourlogin@texas.net).

  10. You should receive the message "Opening BINARY mode data connection." At this point, the download is beginning. Depending on your modem speed, this should take anywhere from 50 to 100 minutes. When the download is complete, you should get a message saying "Transfer complete."
  11. At the "ftp>" prompt, type quit to exit the FTP program.
