Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking Setup

These instructions will serve to help you configure Windows 95 to use the Internet through Texas.Net. You may need your Windows 95 installation disks (or CD).

PART A - Installing Dial-Up Networking

If you have the Internet Setup Wizard (included with pre-installed Windows 95 systems or with the Microsoft Plus! Pack), run it now by either double-clicking on the 'Internet' icon on your desktop or by clicking on 'Start | Run' and typing 'inetwiz'. This will greatly simplify your Texas.Net installation. If you received a diskette labeled 'MS Internet Explorer for Windows 95' from Texas.Net, place it in your floppy drive and click on 'Start | Run' and type 'a:\msie' to install it from our diskette. If you have neither of these, you may follow these instructions to install dial-up networking.

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon.
  3. Select the 'Windows Setup' tab.
  4. Double-click on 'Communications'.
  5. Make sure 'Dial-Up Networking' is checked. If it's not, check it now and click on OK and OK again. After Setup finishes copying the files it needs, you will be asked to restart your computer. Do so.

PART B - Configuring Your Network

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'.
  2. Double-click on the 'Network' icon.
You must have at least three items listed in order to connect to Texas.Net. You need 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'Dial-Up Adapter' and 'TCP/IP'.
    If you're missing...
    • 'Dial-Up Adapter', click on Add, select 'Adapter' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Dial-Up Adapter' on the right. Click on OK.
    • 'Client for Microsoft Networks', click on Add, select 'Client' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'Client for Microsoft Networks' on the right. Click on OK.
    • 'TCP/IP', click on Add, select 'Protocol' and click on Add. Choose 'Microsoft' on the left, and 'TCP/IP' on the right. Click on OK.
If you're on a Local Area Network (LAN), check with your local Network Administrator (not us) before attempting step 3. If your computer is not on a local network, it's safe to proceed.
  3. If you have listed 'Client for Netware Networks', 'IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol' and/or 'NetBEUI', click on each one in turn and click on Remove to remove it.
  4. Double-click on 'Client for Microsoft Networks'.
  5. Make sure nothing is checked under 'Logon validation'. Under 'Network logon options', select 'Quick logon'. Click on OK.
  6. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Adapter'. Click on the 'Bindings' tab. Only 'TCP/IP' should be checked there. Click on OK.
  7. Double-click on 'TCP/IP'.
    Under the 'IP Address' tab,
    • Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
    Under the 'WINS Configuration' tab,
    • Select 'Disable WINS Resolution'.
    Under the 'Gateway' tab,
    • Make sure that the box under 'Installed Gateways' is empty.
    • If you have anything listed there, select it and click on Remove.
    Under the 'DNS Configuration' tab,
    • At 'Host', enter a name for your computer consisting of a single word.
    • For 'Domain', type: texas.net
    • If you are dialing into our Austin, Georgetown, Dripping Springs or Dallas lines:
      • Under 'DNS Server Search Order', type 207.207.0.3 and click on Add.
      • Type 206.127.0.3 and click on Add again.
    • If you are dialing into our Houston, San Antonio, or Boerne lines:
      • Under 'DNS Server Search Order', type 206.127.0.3 and click on Add.
      • Type 207.207.0.3 and click on Add again.
    • Under 'Domain Suffix Search Order', type texas.net and click on Add.
  8. Click on OK.
  9. Click on the 'Identification' tab. Make sure the fields for 'Computer Name' and 'Workgroup' are completed (they don't need to be anything particular, just filled in).
  10. Click on OK. Restart your computer if you are asked to do so.

PART C - Creating Your Texas.Net Connection

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Networking'. If you aren't prompted to create your connection, double-click on 'Make New Connection'.
  3. When asked to enter a name for this connection, enter 'TexasNet' or something that you will remember for future reference. Select your modem and click on Next.
  4. Enter the area code and phone number for your Texas.Net connection. Numbers are listed on your confirmation packet. Click on Next.
  5. Click on Finish.
  6. Right-click (single click with the right mouse button) on your new Texas.Net connection. Click on Properties.
  7. Verify that all of the settings listed here are correct, and click on the Server Type button.
    Type of Dial-Up Server:
    • PPP; Windows 95; Windows NT 3.5; Internet
    Advanced Options:
    • Enable Software Compression should be checked.
    • TCP/IP should be checked.
    • (Nothing else here should be checked)
  8. Click on TCP/IP Settings.
'Server Assigned IP Address' should be selected.
'Specify Name Server Addresses' should be selected.
    • If you are dialing into our Austin, Georgetown, Dripping Springs, or Dallas lines:
      • Under 'Primary DNS' enter 207.207.0.3
      • Under 'Secondary DNS' enter 206.127.0.3
    • If you are dialing into our San Antonio, Houston, or Boerne lines:
      • Under 'Primary DNS' enter 206.127.0.3
      • Under 'Secondary DNS' enter 207.207.0.3
    • Both 'Primary WINS' and 'Secondary WINS' should be 0.0.0.0
'Use IP Header Compression' and 'Use Default Gateway' should be checked.
  9. Click on OK, click on OK, and click on OK again.

PART D - Connecting to Texas.Net

  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'.
  2. Double-click on 'Dial-Up Networking'.
  3. Double-click on your Texas.Net connection.
If you used the Internet Setup Wizard in part A to set up your dial-up networking, simply double-clicking on the Internet icon will do the same thing as the above three steps.
  4. Enter your login name as it appears on your confirmation packet.
  5. Enter your password exactly as it appears in your confirmation packet. Watch for L's that look like 1's (ones) and O's that look like 0's (zeros). Also check to be sure that you're entering capital and lower-case letters appropriately.
  6. Verify that the phone number listed is exactly how you would normally dial it (i.e. no leading 9's or the 210/512 area code where it should not be).
Some installations of Win95 will allow you to check the 'Save Password' field, which will allow you to connect to Texas.Net in the future without having to re-enter your password. Normally, this option will become available after your first successful connection with Texas.Net.

  7. Click on Connect. This will dial and connect you to the Internet. Once connected, you may then launch any Internet applications you have on your computer, or proceed to download a copy of the Microsoft Internet Explorer or the Netscape Navigator.

If you haven't installed Microsoft Internet Explorer via the Internet Setup Wizard, you may now proceed to install Microsoft Internet Explorer.
