Instructions on using Rules in Outlook to filter spam using SPAM TAGGING: (Note: MS Outlook will hide some menu features by default. If you do not see a menu item, but you do see a double chevron at the bottom of the menu, hover the cursor over the two down arrows, and all menu items will become visible.) 1. Open MS Outlook. 2. Click on the "File" menu, then select "New" then "Folder..." 3. In the Create New Folder window that appears, choose and enter the name for the folder you want your Spam to be sent; "Spam Folder" is a good choice. 4. Once the name is entered, click the "OK" button, and the Create New Folder window will disappear. 5. Click on the "tools" menu, then select "Rules Wizard..." 6. In the Rules Wizard window that appears, click the "New..." button. A new Rules Wizard window will appear, which will be referred to here as the front Rules Wizard window. 7. Click in the radio button (bubble) next to "Start from a blank rule" 8. Ensure that "Check messages when they arrive" is highlighted, then click the "Next >" button. 9. Click in the checkbox to the left of "with specific words in the message header" 10. In the lower half of the window, click on the underlined words "specific words" 11. In the Search Text window that appears, type "X-Spam-Flag: YES" then click the "Add" button. 12. Ensure that "X-Spam-Flag: YES" appears in the lower half of the Search Text window, and click the "OK" button. The Search Text window should disappear. 13. Back in the front Rules Wizard window, click the "Next >" button. 14. In the upper half of the window, click in the checkbox to the left of "move it to the specified folder" 15. In the lower half of the window, click on the underlined word "specified" 16. A third Rules Wizard window will appear, allowing you to select which folder you would like your spam sent to. Select the "Spam" folder created earlier, then click the "OK" button. This third Rules Wizard window will disappear. 17. Back in the front Rules Wizard window again, click the "Next >" button. 18. At this point you may add any exceptions to your new rule; they are not necessary, however, and won't be discussed in this instruction. When you have finished your exceptions, click the "Next >" button. 19. You must now select a name for your new rule. "Spam Rule" is quite self-explanatory, but you may use which ever name you prefer. If you have potential spam in your Inbox, click in the checkbox to the left of "Run this rule now on messages already in 'Inbox'." 20. Click the "Finish" button. You will now return to the original Rules Wizard window, and your new rule should be listed under Apply rules in the following order. 21. Click the "OK" button. You are now finished. After you have created this rule, any thing our spam filter catches and 'tags' will be filtered to the folder called 'JunkMail' that you created at the beginning of this document. You can then empty that folder at your discretion, after checking the contents.
